Lyrics:

My song for you this evening, it's not to make you sad

Nor for adding to the sorrows of this troubled northern land,

But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind

I'll tell you of two friends one time who were both good friends of mine.

Allan Bell from Banagh, he lived just across the fields,

A great man for the music and the dancing and the reels.

O'Malley came from South Armagh to court young Alice fair,

And we'd often meet on the Ryan Road and the laughter filled the air.

There were roses, roses

There were roses

And the tears of the people

Ran together

Though Allan, he was Protestant, and Sean was Catholic born,

It never made a difference for the friends, it was strong.

And sometimes in the evening when we heard the sound of drums

We said, ``It won't divide us. We always will be one.''

For the ground our fathers plowed in, the soil, it is the same,

And the places where we say our prayers have just got different names.

We talked about the friends who died, and we hoped there'd be no more.

It's little then we realized the tragedy in store.

It was on a Sunday morning when the awful news came round.

Another killing has been done just outside Newry Town.

We knew that Allan danced up there, we knew he liked the band.

When we heard that he was dead we just could not understand.

We gathered at the graveside on that cold and rainy day,

And the minster he closed his eyes and prayed for no revenge.

All all of us who knew him from along the Ryan Road,

We bowed our heads and said a prayer for the resting of his soul.

Now fear, it filled the countryside. There was fear in every home

When a car of death came prowling round the lonely Ryan Road.

A Catholic would be killed tonight to even up the score.

``Oh, Christ! It's young O'Malley that they've taken from the door.''

``Allan was my friend,'' he cried. He begged them with his fear,

But centuries of hatred have ears that cannot hear.

An eye for an eye was all that filled their minds

And another eye for another eye till everyone is blind.

So my song for you this evening, it's not to make you sad

Nor for adding to the sorrows of our troubled northern land,

But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind.

I'll tell you of two friends one time who were both good friends of mine.

I don't know where the moral is or where this song should end,

But I wondered just how many wars are fought between good friends.

And those who give the orders are not the ones to die.

It's Bell and O'Malley and the likes of you and I.

There were roses, roses

There were roses

It's so powerfully beautiful and sad at the same time. I can't stop listening to it. This was one of the songs I took with me to boot camp.

You are correct, that many settled the Avalon mostly.

Just so you know, the actual Irish "heritage", in the sense of descendants, is not that common outside the Avalon Peninsula. There are some - and Irish music is played and loved all over the island - but the Irish emigrants settled mostly on the Avalon, initially.

I am a Newfoundlander myself, and a rabid separatist. It irritates me to no end when people refer to me as a Canadian.

Thank you for calling us Newfoundlanders not Canadians. None of us have ever considered ourselves canadian. Even if were not a republic anymore we still act like it.

The best version of this song that I have heard. In the end hate breeds only more hate. Its victims are the common people like you and me. If we could just learn to live and let live.

This particular group is from Newfoundland Gavin, and Newfoundland is considered to be the most Irish place in the world, outside of Ireland. We are stronger in our heritage more so than those in America. It is an island and was cut off from a lot of the other cultures that permeated the U.S. and due to that many of the old Irish traditions still survive. If you look up Newfoundland and listen to the accents you will understand. I have many been asked if I were Irish due to my heavy accent.

Fair enough. But there is nothing Canadian about this artist: They are Newfoundlanders. But really, a good song is a good song no matter who sings it. And like Doober82 said, heritage is heritage, whether we are Irish or not, we are descended partly from the Irish, and history and blood are important things to remember.

thats because it tells of a story that happened and many more like it. Proud to be Irish

I'm indifferent because i was not born an Irish by your definition (not born there), but both my mom and dad's families were, and it carried over the water with them to Newfoundland...therefore i'm an Irish descendant and keep the heritage close...it's a matter of perspective i guess

Yes but 53 million americians claim to be part irish and we only sent you three most of the people who went to america were scots and unless you are born there and your entire family is irish then I do not class people who say they have irish family as irish people i am 100 percent irish and I will always be

It's about heritage...I'm a Newfoundlander and both sides of my heritage stem back to those roots...just a way for people to not forget and show they are proud

I'm 3 generations out of Ireland. Same place these guys are from. Came to harsher climes and greater strife than they left, all for the chance to build from nothing. We share the same history. My grndfather's father was there when yours was. Do we forget? Why?
