Very true, The Byrds were lip syncing to Mr. Tambourine Man and Mr. Spaceman in 1967 TV spots and those songs were released in 1965 and 1966 respectively. And it never hurt to remind audiences about previous hits. Beach Boys played Good Vibrations on Ed Sullivan in 1968. It came out in 1966 and by 1968 they had fallen out of favor (big time) in America. In 1966 they were equal to The Beatles. Should have gone on Ed in 1966 or 1967!

Thanks for the reply! I saw The Yardbirds last month at the Sausalito Art Fair, it was a fantastic concert. I hope you come to California again soon. Many thanks!

Thank you, Jim. I have read a bunch of bios on rock stars & there are often wrong "facts" in them that I've become like Jimmy Page, who had tossed a book about LZ after reading 2 paragraphs. I know he went to Mylett's funeral not long ago. Mylett seems to have been trustworthy & in that book no salacious junk. Nice that he interviewed you--it's a chunky chapter. Are there any good books on the Yardbirds that are trustworthy? Thank you for replying.

Sometimes the TV shows are very specific about what they want you to play!

I wasn`t considered as I had left with Keith to eventually form Renaissance. Chris was in the picture, but was replaced by John Paul.

Yes that is quite correct - Howard Mylett actually came round my house to interview me for that book.

Says that George Harrison got recognized for sitar use in pop since you didn't release version w/ sitar. Question is, why didn't you use the sitar riff on this song? Says the sound was too thin & Beck used the fuzz box instead. Like Keith Richards had said Mick was first harmonica lead singer, it seems YB missed some credit. It's a great song no matter, but these details are written in several places so some think it important music history. Unless one was Ravi Shankar rock groups dropped sitar.

Jim, I read in Howard Mylett's book that Page had bought one of the earliest sitars in '64 & even though he wasn't w/ the Yardbirds you used it for this song w/ a hired sitar player but did not include the riff on the release. Book says you said at a conference that 'the impact of Indian music was dying due to over-exposure.' True by '67...the Stone's album Their Satanic Majesty Request, the Beatles et al., by '67 it had become trendy & hackneyed. (ctnd next post)

I read in Howard Mylett's book on LZ, which the beginning is devoted to the Yardbirds, that in July '68 Keith Relf & Jim M. paired off to form a group Together, then Renaissance. Chris Dreja stayed on under the New Yardbirds for a Sept tour. Jimmy Page was looking for Keith & Jim replacements, John Paul Jones called, Dreja decided to go into photography & Page went on looking & finally got Plant & Bonham. McCarty left Relf to form a group Shoot & played piano. Hope that's right.

Is it true that you and Chris Dreja were initially considered for Led Zeppelin when the Yardbirds broke up?

Why are the Yardbirds lip-syncing to a 3 year old song, one that Page didn't play on? Why weren't they promoting something a current single?
