Also, Grifflaw, while there is some evidence to suggest that there was a language family that preceeded Goidelic or even father back to the original Celtic divergence, supported by strange archeological anomolies, the commonly held belief, and understanding is along the lines of what RaveofDenmark wrote. Also English takes alot of heritage from West German, which is along the same route.
