Every time I hear this song,... I think back to Redondo Beach circa 1983 ,..I was 18 and constantly played this album ,...this very "Gray" album was so COLD and murky and bitter,... I remember how i thought the mix on that old scratchy vinyl was so dull ,..so I had to crank the music louder and louder to really hear it ,... and that's when all the different emotions would hit: sadness, anger, isolationism, ,..this record was the perfect music for me then ,... but I found the bitterness in Who By Numbers even more REAL ! ,..there is no music Like the Who ,..all other bands are way inferior ,...

This is my favorite "album" of all time! 40 years have gone by and this music is not dated one bit. I can't say that about any other band's music. Maybe the Stones and the Beatles (a few songs) but this entire album is timeless! 'Simply my all time favorite!

Before I became a teenager, I would here tracks from this album when I was living in Corpus Christi. When we moved to Houston and I got a part time job, I bought it. On virtually every song I could identify with the main character. The story is about a boy who wanted to be accepted. I have never been accepted. Always on the outside. I know of people who have lifelong friends. I don't know that. The album needs to be listened to in it's entirety to get the full measure of it's impact. Now when I listen to it, I feel nostalgic. I did have moments of enjoyment in my youth. Thank you so much for helping me bring back some old times.

I think "near" would actually be better, but I'm certain he's saying "here". You might be a pretty good songwriter... :O)) I'm not sure about the other part though-is it, "with you here", or "when you're here"? When I listen, it sounds like "when you here", which of course would not be "proper English". :O) Wish I still had the album-anybody have it and can check the lyrics there?
