The key factor was the master manipulator, Thom Bell. I think he must have been overjoyed when he realized that their voices were so much alike. Only difference was in delivery and Phil's timing, years of pent up emotion, and desire to be acknowledged for his vocal mastery.Thom used them together in order to minimize the impending problem that had to come. The first thing he did was choose "I'll be around" to be their first 45 release. Doing that got everyone's attention because the lead's delivery was quite Wynnish but Bobby Smith sang it all.

Everybody loves Philippe's voice, but Booby has a great voice too especially on I'll be around. Philippe just rides a song till it falls off the rails!!!! Incredible Group!!!
