Lyrics:

Have you heard of the ship called the good Reuben James?

And by hard fighting men, both of honor and of fame,

She flew the Stars and Stripes of the Land of the Free,

But tonight she's in her grave at the bottom of the sea.

Tell me what were their names, tell me what were their names?

Did you have a friend on the good Rueben James?

What were their names? Tell me what were their names?

Did you have a friend on the good Rueben James?

One hundred men went down to their dark and watery grave,

When that good ship went down, only fourty-four were saved.

Was the last day of October, they saved fourty-four,

From the cold icy waters by the cold Iceland shore.

Tell me what were their names, tell me what were their names?

Did you have a friend on the good Rueben James?

What were their names? Tell me what were their names?

Did you have a friend on the good Rueben James?

It was there in the dark of that uncertain night,

They watched for the U-Boat and waited for a fight,

Then a whine and a rock and a great explosion roared,

And they lay the Reuben James on the cold ocean floor.

Tell me what were their names, tell me what were their names?

Did you have a friend on the good Rueben James?

What were their names? Tell me what were their names?

Did you have a friend on the good Rueben James?

Well, many years have passed since those brave men are gone,

In those cold icy waters, now they're still and they're calm,

Many years have passed, but still I wonder why,

The worst of men must fight and the best of men must die.

Tell me what were their names, tell me what were their names?

Did you have a friend on the good Rueben James?

What were their names? Tell me what were their names?

Did you have a friend on the good Rueben James?

What were their names? Tell me what were their names?

Did you have a friend on the good Rueben James?

This song would never have been written if Hitler hadn't invaded in the USSR!

I was lucky enough to be 49 years old this June 30th, and the Weavers, because of my parents, I remember all of the lyrics and treasure their legacy. We took car trips to visit family in neighboring states, and both my parents played and sang their folk songs.

I like the Woody Guthrie version better. After all he wrote the song.

As a Brit I'd just like to say some of us remember the convoys including merchant marine, one of my local clifftops has a fencepost with poppies for them. Thank you!

I didn't have a friend on the Rueben James, but, as a sailor, I had brothers aboard that ship. When ground troops go into battle they have a good chance of being brought home when they fall. When a ship goes down, we stay with the ship. Chances are, we don't come home. =Stefan=

After the 72nd anniversary of the sinking of the U.S.S. Reuben James, I think I'll see about suggesting something new. The Reuben James was a neutral vessel when she sank, and I think she deserves more recognition than she has at the moment. None of my classmates know of the Reuben James, and I want to try and make it a national day of mourning for the Reuben James May God bless their souls, and have them rest in peace.

This song nearly brings me to tears everytime I hear it. Glad for you and your family, I have no doubt that no crewman that lost his life would have begrudged your dad his.

The Party considered WW2 an "Imperialist British War" until June 22 1941 when Hitler invaded Russia- hence the total flip-flop in policy.

I'm just looking for old songs that I haven't heard in a long time. Didn't find this until YouTube corrected me.

@DBMalone He did take a lot heat for it. They didn't let him steer the boat anymore and he had a hearing. I don't think he was penalized as he had a good excuse and I believe he had some good people speaking on his behalf.

@bonsai108 Wow... what happened to your grandfather because of that? That could be a pretty serious charge. I served on a destoyer in the Navy, and we were told from boot camp that destroyers were expendable (as you indicated), and were expected to last only three minutes in a hot fight. The conclussion is obvious... it's better to lose a cheap and easily replaced tin can with 350 men than lose the heavy (a carrier in WW II.... battleship before that) with a compliment of 3 to 5,000.

@5CX1500 Just thought you should know (maybe you do know?) that they are set to decommission Reuben James on August 30th next year. I just read an article on the e-version of Navy Times about it, sent to me by a former shipmate of mine. I was an OS3 aboard USS Buchanan (DDG-14) from 1977-80. We old salts need to stick together. ;-)

My grandfather was the Radio Officer on the Reuben James - Paul L. Magaris. I wish I could have known him.

My grandpa Danny Del Grosso survived that shit. The problem with these destroyers is they were supposed to take the torpedo hits as protection to the main vessels being escorted. Later my grandpa was on another ship steering and he was ordered to take the hit. He was replaced as he wouldn't do it.

My dad was a destroyer escort sailor in WWII. I was an Amphibious sailor in Vietnam. Honors to any who had a friend on the Reuben James.
