I used a Big Muff distortion pedal through a Fender Super Reverb back in those days, and got all the distortion I could handle playing a vintage Vox Huricane Guitar with DiMarzio Super Distortion pick ups.

Well, allow me to state now, that if you want immediate distortion before the speaker is fucked within twenty minutes, stab it. Otherwise, I'd just turn the low end and the gain up, and have the mid and high end set around the same are ,,,, i all else fails, run a guitar through a really shit/cheap distortion pedal into a bass amp ... or just go and look for an old school amp

Specifically I'd say probably Valve heads ... cause thats all there was in the 70's and 80's that was afforable... or really cheap ones where you've stabbed the fuck out of the speaker with a screwdriver
