I did not know this was the first song Ian Tyson wrote. Procol Harum's first song, "Whiter Shade of Pale," is their best, as well. I do not know if "Gentle on My Mind" was Hartford's first song, but it was one of his early efforts. I wonder how many writers start out with something really great and then work their entire career to try to equal it.

Who is doing the lead vocal here?

This is great ... but I still like Neil Young's version best. I think it's the way he uses his guitar for this that sets it apart for me.And yet I still love this version.

I feel kind of sad every time I listen to this song. Tyson certainly knew how to capture our emotion when he penned the lyrics...

Which one of the guys is singing lead on this? I've never learned to recognize any of their voices except Judith's.

I could listen to their music all day long. As a matter of fact-I have.

This is the first song Ian Tyson ever wrote - how do you beat that? He is still writing fine music today with that hope.
