The Rosewood Thieves - "Untitled #1"

June 1, 2009

The night before we filmed this session, The Rosewood Thieves headlined a show at the Bootleg Theatre in Los Angeles. It was their only L.A. show due to a flood (true story...) at the venue they were supposed to play at two days prior, and it pretty much marked the mid point of a here-and-back (and everywhere in between) tour from New York City. At the show, frontman Erick Jordan called L.A. their "second home" (organ/keyboardist Mackenzie is originally from Venice Beach, and her parents were kind enough to lend us their home for filming). The band's L.A./N.Y. connection is no secret; their first single, "Los Angeles," off the From The Decker House EP, hearkens: "I've got some friends in L.A. / Telling me to head out their way / 'Cause they know I'm in love with the sun."

When we showed up to film, it was clear the band was enjoying having a real home after a month and a half on the road: Making use of free internet, showers, Paul (guitar) was even frying up a couple eggs. No one was really sure what was going on for the session, they just knew they had to leave in a couple hours for their show in Long Beach that night. Was it just Erick with an acoustic guitar for a couple songs, maybe some backing instruments? There was an upright in the corner that sounded amazing with the vaulted ceilings in the living room... That couldn't go to waste. And before we knew it, the van was unloaded: amps, guitar, bass, pedal steel. Everyone was in on it.

Full disclosure: I'm a huge fan of The Rosewood Thieves. They are immensely talented musicians, songwriters, and storytellers. Very few bands get me this excited about new music, which is odd since their sound might be considered vintage, or old, or roots, or whatever you want to call it; maybe the word you're looking for is "timeless." Then again, I may be biased, since most of the music I listen to tends to come from before 1975. Either way, it's always a treat to see these guys when they come through town, watch the way they tinker with the instrumentation and lyrics (the recent addition of the pedal steel is a perfect fit, especially on anything from the Lonesome EP), and continue to hone in their craft. Hopefully they feel like heading out our way more often.

The Rosewood Thieves played four songs that day, including a Bob Dylan cover.
