The River's Lament, by Laurelyn Dossett 2014 Pleasant Garden Music, ASCAP. Video by Harvey Robinson and Carolyn DeBerry of Monkeywhale.
This lament was inspired by the Dan River coal ash spill in February of 2014. While it was not written as a particular piece of advocacy, it is my hope that people will be reminded to pay attention and take care of their rivers, where every they may be.

Once I loved a River strong
Listen to the River’s song
Born among the meadow springs
Rocks and rills taught her to sing
She can’t speak but she can cry
She can’t fight but she can die
Poisoned on a winter’s day
While we looked the other way
And we gather at the River
And we stand along her shore
And we promise not to hurt her anymore
We step into the River
We swim against the tide
We wash her clean with all the tears we’ve cried
Sing you now the River’s song
The story of a love gone wrong
Lessons learned forgotten soon
We’ll neglect the River’s tune
Come the fall, the blood red moon
Can’t recall the greening June
Winter’s coal black tragedy
Drown in shallow memory
As we gather at the river
As we stand along her shore
As we promise not to hurt her anymore
We step into the river
We swim against the tide
We wash her clean with all the tears we’ve cried
Beasts of field and birds on wing
Listen as the River sings
Whispering “remember me”
As she tumbles to the sea
Memory’s a River
She’ll carry us along
And together we will sing the River’s song
As we gather at the River
And we stand along her shore
And we promise not to hurt her anymore
