As a result of smoking. I'm not a country fan but a couple of the best singers are Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill. Joss Stone is amazing too. All are non-smokers. Smoking has taken a huge toll on Stevie Nicks's voice. But I doubt Taylor Momsen will be around that long since her music appeals to those under 21 and her songs are all about anger, depression, and dying.

I personally love the effect smoking has on voices. And from what I've seen, most singers work past the lung capacity problem, or don't have it to begin with.
