The Police, "Message In A Bottle" guitar lesson. Today we're using the Philosopher's Rock compressor and a Catalinbread Callisto Chorus/Vibrato for an early Andy Summers tone. The finger stretching 'add 9' takes some getting used to but it wouldn't sound the same with ordinary chords. The Message In A Bottle riff on the Telecaster mixed with a little comp and chorus produces an uncommon tone, a common thread in Police music. The pre-chorus of the tune contrasts with simple power chords that build tension until the graceful strums of a C#minor and a jangling A chord. Learning this song can help you to look at phrasing differently and playing outside the box. Enjoy your daily guitar lesson.

I just watched video from Andy Summers and yours is better.. Your tone is spot on and you play very clean and with great rhythm. If anyone reading this has ever tried to play this let me tell you the timing is a little tricky to keep the beat and get the slides and hammer on's just right. Good lesson bro!

I cant help to think someone needs to do this song with a metal flavour... i can picture it muffled loud and distorted.

relentless work on the fingers is the opening riff.

0.33 sounds like blitzkrieg bop

3:09 is F#m and 3:20 is C#m7

Andy Summers actually used a Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress Flanger on most of those early Police tunes, but set up to sound chorusy.

Just a small note: some of the chords are shown as major ( 2:23 ) even though minor is implied by the key (Emaj/C#m). The first section should probably be written as C#m A B F#m, even though you're not playing the 3rds.

For those ones who are about to have a go on this song, I STRONGLY recommend you warm up before you practice/play this... Good luck!

I'm liking the watery kind of synth sound that appears in the background starting at 1:05. Though maybe not on topic for the video, I wish they mentioned what effects were used for that sound.
