Heard in the Rush documentary "Beyond the Lighted Stage." And a childhood friend of Geddy Lee's says this is really the band which turned Geddy on to bass.

Time travel thru the artful, the obscure, predawn experimental. 44 years ago, before calcified formula.

@journeybear I totally agree; Magic People has long been considered by myself as one of the greatest LP's ever. Ellis Island was good too, but the first one just has that certain something that resonates so profoundly in a sort of dreamy psychedelic way. Just very cool, and with superb songwriting. What a great band.

@mikhailthekid Yes I vaguely remember them, but just since his name is in the liner notes. They were enormous in Canada, not so in the US. For me nothing any of The Paupers did later compares with "Magic People," even "Ellis Island," which had some good songs. "Magic People" was the result of an extraordinary confluence of inspiration, talent, performance, and production; even if it was just a moment, it is eternal. Every musician should be so lucky as to have something like that in his catalog.

I had the great pleasure of seeing The Paupers as warm up band for Jimi Hendrix back in Toronto in the late 60's. They were fantastic! I also got to see them at my high school about a year or so later. Adam had left by that time as well as Denny. Still have my vinyl copies of both of their albums. I was very excited to find 'Dig Deep'. It was as exciting as when I finally got the Ugly Ducks album on cd as well. Gone are the great old days.

Would have loved to have seen that. Saw Cream twice, though. Skip Prokop (drummer) went on to play with Al Kooper's Kooper Session band, rhythm guitarist and lead singer Adam Mitchell had a solo album ten years later, "Redhead In Trouble," but this, their first album, was the stuff!! So what if it only got to #178 on the Billboard Top 200!

I am STILL listening to this music from 1967, it's on a CD called DIG DEEP (both of their albums) - to me, Chuck Beal's one of the greatest guitar players !
