John Darnielle is still writing some of the finest songs around. Love everything about this.

I am so disappointed when I realized that it wasn't "Che Guevara coming off the top rope". because the absurdity of the situation made my day. kinda bums me out that it isn't the case.

For those who don't know about Chavo, the more well known Chavo is actually Chavo Jr. This song is about Chavo Sr who came up from Mexico and did a lot of small time wrestling gigs. Later his song Chavo Jr made it to WWE (WWF) and WCW. John makes note of this in the song in a line.

I remember sitting ringside ...for me it was Freddie Blassie in the long awaited Bite v Bite with a Chavo nemesis Grand Goliath ..I mean Freddie will always be the Michael Jordan of ol school .....and of course the third man in the ring that night was Johnny Red Shoes....man they were the brightest Red leathers with a shinny gloss that cut through fog. Freddie his teeth (young) Chavo and UHF were at times the only sanity I had at that age .......that world is long gone now. ...The words are so nostalgic....

I guess being a wrestling fan helped me comprehend better that this song is not all about wrestling. Yet another great work from TMG. And the 'poppish' element completely complements childlike mood of the song

I'm not really a big fan of The Mountain Goats, but this track is pretty righteous.

You let me down but John Darnielle never once did!Red shoes DuganHolding his arm high all out of breathI hated all of Chavo's enemiesI would pray nightly for their deathsDescending like fireOn the people who deserved it mostAlways completely unknownOutside of Texas and the West CoastHe was my hero back when I was a kidYou let me down but Chavo never once didYou called him names to try to get beneath my skinNow your ashes are scattered on the windThis is brilliant songwriting. I love the build up, the wording, and how this song has everything TMG is all about. It makes you want to scream the lyrics along with him. John's aware he's talking about wrestling, but just like he did with death metal, meth or the bible, it's filled with meaning. If you think this is just a song about a Mexican wrestler, you just don't get it. This will probably be my favorite album of 2015.

"Beat the Champ is about professional wrestling, which was an avenue of escape for me when I was a kid. Wrestling was low-budget working class entertainment back then, strictly UHF material. It was cheap theater. You had to bring your imagination to the proceedings and you got paid back double. I wrote these songs to re-immerse myself in the blood and fire of the visions that spoke to me as a child, and to see what more there might be in them now that I’m grown." - John Darnielle himself
