Dinu Lipatti's bones

We stank of hair dye and ammonia.

We sealed ourselves away from view.

You were looking at the void and sat unblinking.

The best that I could do was to train my eyes on you.

We scaled the hidden hills beneath the surface,

Scraped our fingers bloody on the stones.

And built our little house that we could live in

Out of Dinu Lipatti's bones.

We kept our friends at bay all summer long.

Treated the days as if they'd kill us if they could.

Wringing out the hours like blood drenched bed sheets

To keep winter time at bay but december showed up anyway.

There was no money, it was money that you wanted.

I went downtown, sold off most of what I owned.

And we raised a tower to broadcast all our dark dreams

From Dinu Lipatti's bones.

Gorgeous song. I just listened to it after being buried deep in my music collection for the past 5 years. I never knew the meaning - I just loved the lyrics.

This is easily one of my favorite Mountain Goats songs, right up there with Cotton and Tallahassee~

I wonder if anyone here knows who Dinu Lipatti is? He was one of the greatest classical pianists (a breed of musician that The Goats think work harder than any other) that ever lived. He died at the age of 33 from a rare form of Lymphoma, still giving concerts up to his death. His recordings of Bach, Chopin, and Mozart taken at the last recital he gave while on death's door remain unmatched in their beauty and interpretation. This song is to honor his memory.

Every song on the sunset tree is so amazing. I love the Mountain Goats, and this album ranks right at the top. I've had this song on repeat for about a month now, so amazing.

Would be a perfect song if it wasn't for the repetition of "at bay". Really stands out and annoys me :\

Couple quibbles... It should be spelled Lipatti, rather than Lupatti. Wringing out the hours, instead of Ringing and I am mostly certain he is singing "you were looking at the void and seldom blinking"

This song actually made me cry on the London underground today, a merciless place to be sitting and weeping for what appears to be no reason! This album is so pretty I sometimes have to stop listening.

I recieved a CD from a friend containing a bunch of Mountain Goats songs, this one was probably my favorite. Thanks for uploading it. Finding it isn't exactly easy.
