*Mountain Goats - Tallahassee*Those of you who know me well know that The Mountain Goats and I have a long history together. They've been with me through the good, the bad, the ugly - I listened to them while walking into work, while writing my thesis, on long flights across oceans, after arguments, killing time waiting in lines...I have memories associated with nearly every single song. The Tallahassee album is unique in its look into a non-typical relationship. It's about a couple, unofficially named 'The Alphas'. They are unhappy together yet love each other too much to leave. So they set out to live an old abandoned house in Tallahassee that is falling apart, an apt metaphor for their relationship, and proceed to drink themselves to death while hating each other with an intensity that is equal to their love. In the end, the husband kills his wife by drowning her, and then burns the house down with him and his wife's lifeless body in it. It might seem a rather morbid topic, but I love this album because the emotions and feelings described in it are *real*. Its not manufactured soul-less songs without meaning; every word is heavy with meaning. Such is a genius of John Darnielle's poetic songwriting abilities. my friend asked him at a concert what the song is about and he said that it's about the alpha couple getting drunk and burning down their house and then they die in the fire and their ashes get carried to the junkyard by the wind
