"Watching and Waiting" is a 1969 single by the progressive rock band The Moody Blues, and was written by band members Justin Hayward and Ray Thomas. It was first released as a single in October 1969, and was later released in November 1969 on the album To Our Children's Children's Children. While "Watching and Waiting" is not as well known as some other Moody Blues' singles, the background mellotron sound has a similar sound to "Nights in White Satin." The single also featured the song "Out and In" on the B-side.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Coming of age of mankind and leaving of Womb Earth. There in space we will have the room and resources to continue to grow, and fallow our dreams.

Patience is a virtue, which is best kept warm.

I may be right or wrong, but it's worth a listen. Josef

Watching and waitingFor a friend to play withWhy have I been alone so longMole he is burrowing his way to the sunlightHe knows there's some there so strongCos here there's lot of room for doingThe thing you've always been deniedLook and gather all you want toThere's no one here to stop you tryingSoon you will see meCos I'll be all around youBut where I come from I can't tellBut don't be alarmed by my fields and my forestsThey're here for only you to shareCos here there's lot of room for doingThe things you've always been deniedSo look and gather all you want toThere's no one here to stop you tryingWatching and waitingFor someone to understand meI hope it won't be very long

Im a tough old(62) bastard but this teared me up. I have always liked the song but these images were dead on. When you get to be my age you think of stuff like this sometimes. Thank for the reflection of life....and love. Mike

"Mole, he is burrowing his way to the sunlight". . . . how many of us would that apply to? Lovely song. Very heart felt. Thank you for putting this up.

For me, "To Our Children's Children's Children" is the greatest album The Moody Blues put out. Truly a stunning record. This song is such an unusually somber ending for any of their albums. Yet, there remains a hopeful yearning. So timeless. Thanks for posting.

So happy that the Moody Blues finally were honored in the R&R Hall of Fame; I personally was writing letters to them at the R&R Hall of Fame to get that done! such a great band that no other even comes close to. Congrats to them all !!

For me, this is quintessential Moodies. Their highest accomplishment. Truly cosmic. Yet, this album was not as successful as most of their other albums. They took a different tack as a result. I'll never forget how magical it was for me as I sat in my car, listening to the 8-track. I just couldn't get out of the car. Sigh...

All of Justin Hayward's contributions to this album (To Our Children's Children's Children) seem to focus on origins - the origin of our sun, our planet, and then life itself. Maybe I am misinterpreting things, but that is how I see this song as well as I Never Thought I'd Live to Be a Hundred and then its very short follow-up later in the album, I Never Thought I'd Live to Be a Million. The focus of the album was space travel and looking at the future through the past (the moon landing had just occurred). What I have always found so amazing about Hayward is that he could develop just the right melodic stream to deliver his lyrics so that the whole package really packs a wallop. This song, like most of his music, is timeless to me and takes me to a better place anytime I listen.
