What a great sound and song. The Marvelettes version is the best by far.The Action's version is pretty good, though can't compare to this. The Chords' (mod, punk outfit of the seventies) take on this song doesn't make it for me at all.

I had this record YEARS after it was a hit. I played this at a party once when I was a teenager and everybody loved it, though they didn't know who it was. ("This is the Marvelettes? It's so aggressive.")

From the comments, it seems that some who say "we love Motown" expend a lot of energy trying to rewrite the story to damage reputations unfairly and constantly want to pit artist against artist. Fifty years later, they insist that legendary artists have less talent than others despite the reality that the "less talented" artists sold more records, have more chart success, sold more tickets, became more famous and more imitated and sustained careers decades longer than the others "who were better." Some also love to criticize Mr. Gordy and blame him for cheating artists or preventing them from greater stardom. A closer look, though, shows that the artists' own decisions, erratic behavior and limited appeal had far more to do with their career disappointments. I love Mary Wells, but blaming Mr. Gordy for her lack of international stardom is ludicrous. After her initial hits, it was Ms. Wells who left Motown and Mr. Gordy -- she thought her career too big and the company too small to guarantee her greater success. Mr. Gordy did not choose Diana Ross over Ms. Wells. Ms. Wells made the decision to leave, and then found that those other companies were unable to showcase her as Motown could. At the end of her life, it was Mr. Gordy, Ms. Ross and a few others who quietly gave her considerable monetary gifts to ensure her care. Motown produced great music, created a unique sound, and found and developed stars -- wisely providing them each with specific trademark styles. Instead of endless accusations and dramatic reinventions, we should just celebrate the music, the artists and the forward-thinking man who spun it all into pure gold.
