The "mysterious" orchestra returns to this channel but .... meanwhile more information seems to have become available about this fabulous group of musicians. If some sources can be believed, the music played by the Longines Symphonette (sponsored indeed by the famous watch company) was always arranged by Neil Richardson and in later years (probably end of the sixties and into the seventies) the orchestra was conducted by no other than ..... Geoff Love ! So, no wonder these recordings sound so great, with a master arranger like Richardson "behind" the scenes and a super musician and orchestrator like Love conducting the 'Symphonette'. Geoff Love, who we also know as the creator of "Manuel and the Music of the Mountains", has apparently been "quite busy" in those days ...!
Here, the Symphonette Strings play the wonderful "I talk to the trees" from the Lerner & Loewe broadway musical 'Paint Your Wagon" (1951). Frederick Loewe wrote some of his best pieces ever for this play, with other well known compositions like "Wandrin star" and "They call the wind Mariah".
In 1969 a film was made carrying the same name, which starred Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. The musical direction here was in the hands of another great bandleader, Nelson Riddle. Additional songs for the movie were written by André Prévin (not really a 'musical midget' either ;-)
Neil Richardson was a composer and arranger who worked for the BBC for many years. His piece "Approaching Menace" which he wrote especially for the famous BBC quiz "Mastermind" is considered a 'real classic' in its genre.
The arrangements he wrote for the Symphonette are "classics in their genre" too and this "I talk to the trees" is a fine example of that.
From the 1974 box-set "Footlight Parade" here are the famous Symphonette Strings "talking (musically :-) to the trees" ..... Enjoy this great music.
