This is a cover version of the song originally sang by The Nightcrawlers. The pace and flow of the song stays pretty much true to the original.

This cover first appeared on their Galore album.

Note: If there is a song by The Primitives that you would like me to upload, please just leave me a comment with the song you'd like.

I don't care what they say

I'm gonna keep it anyway

I won't let them stretch their necks

To see my little black egg

With the little white specks

I found it in a tree

Just the other day

And now it's mine all mine

They won't take it away

Here comes Nancy here comes Lee

I've got what they want to see

I won't let them stretch their necks

To see my little black egg

With the little white specks

I found it in a tree

Just the other day

And now it's mine all mine

They won't take it away

Oh darling what can I do?

That little black egg's gonna tell on you

I won't let them stretch their necks

To see my little black egg

With the little white specks

My little black egg (repeat)

@garthfromseattle I'd always heard that it was about a drug deal gone bad, but I wasn't there when it was written. Great song, though it's unlikely that anyone will ever improve on the original version.

One of the best power pop acts of the 1980's, they show their garage influences on their sleeves here.

Love The Primitives, but this song belongs to The Night Crawlers. Can't beat their sound.

@garthfromseattle Wow, makes sense now. How did you find all this out? Did you hear or see an interview with whoever wrote it?

The 'Little Black Egg' is the universe. The 'little white specks' are stars. 'The Tree' is the Tree of Life. "Here comes Mary, here comes Lee" (short for Levi) refers to Catholicism and Judaism. "I won't let them stretch their necks" refers to keeping the (Masonic) secrets of the universe safe. "Oh Gol-durn! What can I do?" refers to mankind's helplessness before the Creator and eternal damnation. "The little Black Egg's gonna tell on you" refers to our sins being revealed after our death.

The last song on the last Primitives CD. I remember buying Galore in a music store somewhere in Zurich. The good old days. 'Oh, Darlene, what can I do?'

This is pretty good. Quiet Village also does a real good 'garage band' version!

This song has been a favorite of mine since childhood. This is the best cover I've ever heard! I'd like to know more about the Prmitives.
