In 1958, The Kirby Stone Four released their biggest hit, "Baubles, Bangles And Beads", on the Columbia label.
This song, originally from the musical 'Kismet' earned a Grammy Award nomination, and was so closely associated with the group that thay re-recorded it on two other occassions - firstly in 1964 on the Warner Bros Records label, and again in 1966, with The Tokens on the BT Puppy Records label, under the name 'The U.S. Double Quartet'.
It is the 1964 version, from the album 'Things Are Swingin'!' which we feature on this clip.

This somewhat different than the hit '45' that came out in summer, 1958. I have that single and listen to it often. It's a little 'tighter', less band background. I've got 8 LP's by these guys, great listening.11 years назад

This completely weirded me out once when my alarm clock blared this out at 4 AM when I was half asleep. I listen to it now and again, mostly to freak my family out. It's like some strange evolutionary dead end, like something out of the Cambrian Epoch, that lived once, and died out leaving no descendents. Fascinating.11 years назад

You're correct. The original was on Columbia, whereas this version is on the WB label. A subsequent (1966-68?) version was also released on the BT Puppy label. Unfortunately, I feel there's little artistic merit in either this version or the later re-recording (as enjoyable as they are), as they pale in comparison with the 1958 release. They seem to be little more than an opportunity to re-record the group's theme song and biggest hit whenever the group changed labels. I still enjoy them though!13 years назад

The 1958 version was under Columbia Records. In this 1964 version the acoustics is more clear. But the Columbia Records version also has a nice sound, the difference is they did not feature the sounds of the brass like this one.13 years назад

Back in the sixties, I met Kirby through a friend and we became good friends. He used to take me all over Vegas and introduce me to people there (Vegas was where I was living). I was a young singer there and he just liked to hang out. I was very impressed with that group back in the day and he was a great guy.13 years назад
