The Kinks

I always appreciate how Ray uses so many different musical styles. I love his use in this song of classic 50s chord patterns and harmonies to cover a classic 50s topic - young love. The first half reminds me of some of the teen love hits of that era and of the feel of musicals about the 50s like "Grease," but starting at 1:48, he mixes things up with his usual sophistication (I don't remember any Brill Building tunes about love in which the singer admitted that he "wasn't equipped for the emotional pressures and stresses of it"!), Thanks for posting something from the often-maligned concept era of the Kinks career. I do love the earlier ("middle period") albums even more, but these 70s concept albums were great, too, and really fun to see the Kinks perform in concert, such as with Ray dressing up for "Schoolboys" as a schoolmaster, wearing, if I remember right, a black professorial robe, a scraggly white-haired wig and a mask that made him look old and mean.

When I was ten years old, I attended a private academic school known for administering canings to children who dared to question the authority of the supreme headmaster. My friends and I listened to this album constantly, and even wrote a stage play for it. Our play was never performed, but I heard there may be a film in the works.
