Away from the numbers is a reference to a certain Mod speak for wanting to be a FACE, an ACE FACE at that. I.e... much "better" than being a mere "number". Very very silly I know. A phenomenon that has endured in English rock for a long time. Nowhere near as universal or as important as the Hippy thang btw! I say this as a born in the wool, long in the tooth, 30 years served Mod.
