As the story went, a rough demo tape of this song recorded in their rehearsal room in Manayunk made it's way into the hands of Michael Tearson at WMMR who was a fan of this up and coming ska band playing clubs around Philly. The DJs started playing on the radio and fans called wanting to hear more. And so it began.

Dear me! All these people who think that this was an original for this band. This is very much a Ska song. It has its origins in Jamaica and was performed by Don Drummond and also Skatalites. The references to "pick it up" are common in Ska music. Ska in its original form has found its way into many styles of music. It's just that people don't know but it's there. In many instances, it's what causes people to move there feet.

This is when the hooters peaked for me. I saw them countless times between 1980-1982...

This little beauty was from a tv show on USA Network in 81/82 I think. It was from the Brandywine Club and featured the best local bands around the country. I'm the guy interviewed before the Hooters perform in a goofy grey members only jacket (ah the 80s) but this was a great show. Loved this original line up...They were the ultimate jam band and would just let it ride out there, whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Can you post the rest of the show please?

Yea, thank God for WMMR and a DJ named Pierre Robert who really supported these local bands and had them on his program every chance he got. YOU ARE THE MAN!!! Thanks again for posting this stuff.

Hey dude, thanks for posting this!!!!! THE ORIGINAL HOOTERS - WOW!!!! I saw them way back when. And Robbie just cut his hair. It was down to his waist the first time I saw them at the Ambler Taproom. I can always count on people like you to post this stuff and it just lifts my spirits to a great era in Philly club life. THANK YOU!

probably somewhere around 1982. This version morphed into "Concubine" on 1983's Amore. I want to be YOUR.....birdman.

um.....it's actually a Don Drummond song...it's what is known as a "cover" song, bands will sometimes do songs written and performed by other artists in their live shows...this just happens to be one that ended up on tape and that tape was played on the radio and it was the song that got them their 1st exposure...hence "the one that started it all" I hope I explained it better for you. Enjoy!

ahh, the song that introduced me to the Hooters. Heard it only briefly on radio, way back, but always wished they'd play it more, once they got popular. It's been in my head all these years. Finally remembered to search for it, so I'm glad to hear it again here.
