Yeah, I hear that songwriter fellow, Springsteen, he turned out OK. Sounds better than my somewhat battered Epic demo 45 (the white-label side was stereo) which I've had since '77. Remember, at the time (1974) Springsteen was just a Jersey boy trying to get played, so having a major artist like the Hollies cut one of his tracks did help; "Born to Run" was still a year or so away.

It's not bad but Bruce owns this tune. His vocals fit the mood of this story. The Hollies version makes it sound kind of 'Bubble Gummy".....But I do like it.

Bruce's version of this song was not called "Sandy". It was called "4th of July, Asbury Park". I can think of a few reasons why this title may have been changed, one of them being that "4th of July" is either not comprehensible or is a reminder of a revolutionary colony to a lot of folks in the Hollies' native country. There have been other songs called "Sandy" - Ronny & the Daytonas, Larry Hall, Dion, and in the musical "Grease".

Great to hear this Mike, thanks! Much better than expected. Very impressed how they even furthered their own genius pop sheen production still without reaching the point of brashness. I contend that many of their greatest recordings had an edge of brightness over so many of The Beatles hits as far as immediacy, save for tunes like Rain and Paperback Writer which are both boosted by such excellent booming bass. I'll still give Bruce the edge as this loses the whimsical, mourning aspect his has.
