My son's mom was killed in a car/train accident in January. We had been split up since before we knew she was pregnant. We co-parented, but we stayed apart because we didn't get along. We were total fire and gasoline. She had struggled with a lot of things, but in the last few months before her death, she had really balanced out, and was the best I'd ever seen her. The last Sunday I dropped my son off to her, I almost told her that I was proud of her, but I chickened out, because we seldom said nice things to each other. I never knew she'd be dead the next day.I am now a single dad to our amazing little boy. He is the best parts of both his mom and I, and none of our bullshit. I have always loved this song, but now when I hear it, I think of her, gone at just 26, way too young, and I hope that she knew love and peace in her final moments.No matter what you're history or drama with someone, don't withhold love or praise from them if they really deserve it. You might think you have forever to tell someone the things that matter, but you may not. The last time you saw them, might really be the last time you ever see them. It might the last time they see you. Tell them you love them. Tell them you're proud. Speak your heart when the moment is there, because trust me, you'll spend your life wishing you had.
