I think to fully understand Brian's version of this song you have to be well versed in Gaslight Anthem's music. When I hear this song the imperfections and the nervousness only add to it. In much of Gaslight's music Brian sings and writes as a character who is a bit of a loser, a nervous kid who struggles with romance and self confidence. Listening to this song with an understanding of that context puts the listener (or at least me) in a place where I picture Brian as an afraid teenager pouring his heart out to this girl he has a crush on. He is trying to impress her with a song that he feels captures his love for her and shows her his sensitivity and emotional depth. This version is not about hitting the biggest notes or being spot on with pitch-Brian, Gaslight and even Rock and Roll has never been about that- it is about being emotionally vulnerable and putting yourself out there anyways. It is about conveying feelings and emotions, not about being technically perfect, and in this case I think the imperfections add to the character of the song. My two cents.

He sounds kind of nervous until the second verse. I'd love to hear him do a much more polished version of this. It's not awful, but there are times it feels like he's not sure what he's doing until he's doing it. Not bad, not great either.

So sometimes he starts a little off, or to some people's ears, fuck it, he's Brian Fallon. His voice is beautiful, and I don't know about you guys, but he definitely knows a lot more about music than I do. And even if you don't like the first couple of notes, it's so worth it for what comes next. I love The Gaslight Anthem, and this song is a classic

Brian talks about this song with respect for evryone who has ever done it. Knowing Brian he probably doesnt even want to be the best version of this song, he just puts his own twist on it, like he says himself many artists did. This is not about comparing this version to other versions, its about enjoying what an amazing version Brian made of it. It might not be the best version, but its amazing anyway. Great artwork btw

Read most of the negative comments on youtube. They are not constructive in nature. These people are not critiquing; they are complaining for the sake of pissing on something others enjoy. Constructive criticism is always helpful, but that's not what you find here, nor will the criticism ever reach those who could theoretically benefit. That's why I believe it's better to simply move on and not spew petulant venom when you hear a song you don't like.
