Such a shame that sections of the audience ruin this by shouting "IRA" during the chorus. That is not what this song is about and I hate that such a beautiful and tragic song has been tainted by this.

@Steve Konrad, there's no need to write the story about this song....it was written a thousand times during the Irish Potato Famine of 1845....If you got caught stealing from the landowner, there was only one punishment....you were sent via prison ship to "Van Diemen's land" (Botany Bay Australia). After that your wife and children would have to make their way as best they could or die of starvation. It was either steal to live or, during the 1860's, you could emigrate to the United States and fight for either the Union or Confederacy and take your chances that you would survive the war and earn enough money ($13 a month) to bring your family to wherever you were.....a VERY rare event.
