that is wonderful. So vulnerable. So heart felt. At the end I thought he's going to go falsetto - but no - brilliant.

Thats exactly how I feel. It makes me cry in a happy way each time. Dont know how the other commenter could say it has no feeling.

I love the words but loathe the tune but here is a song I have only just discovered - and this version is sung like a love song. My father, who I used to frequently hear/see sing love songs to my mum, used to sing hymns as a love song to Jesus - he was misunderstood or ahead of his time. It took me 40 years to understand. God bless you

Personally, I think of it as more of a love song.

Being something of a Neil Hannon fan and loving this hymn, I thought that I would put this here. What are your favourite hymns?

I DO have a soul, which is why this is a dirge. I want the other tune which I cannot find on You Tube. It is a great tune but an awful tune - no feeling

It fits, because it builds up, then his voice goes all weak and delicate when he he sings "still small voice of calm" it's perfect!

No soul! How is it a dirge?

His voice is so beautiful. I love how he sings my favorite hymn.

What a superb rendition. Misses notes from time to time but sung as it should be - from the heart.

A sweet sweet sound to The Lord's ear. (and mine)

This is my favourite rendition of an amazing hymn. I like the tension that exists between Hannon's power and fragility - that despite his vocal limitations he attempts to go beyond what he is capable of, or at least to the very edge of it. I think there is a lesson about integrity and spiritual endeavour wrapped up in the delivery of this version, just as much as there is in the lyrical content of the hymn.

Lovely surprise. I'm unconvinced about the way Neil sings the last line but I guess that we love him for his unconventionality.

@boltonwandererskings Couldn't disagree with you more about the tune. I will check out the Rest tune some time, which I understand is used more in the States, but as far as I am concerned this is a beautiful marriage of words and music.

This is a dirge but there is a better tune (Rest)
