I don't understand why so many people think this is based on Poe's poem Annabel Lee. Other than the name Annabel and some references to the beach, this song has nothing in common with the poem.

We used to call it 'oceanslime' when we had to go there on leave from base... just saying... I thought it was kinda nice especially over towards the coast... except for the main drag close to the base.. with that hotel where every 8th night was free, the tvs didn't work and there was always a puddle of rainwater in the middle of the moldy bed from the roof leaks....

I've got an unhealthy obsession with Annabel Lee, so when I saw the name of this song before listening I thought to myself 'It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, that a maiden there lived whom you may know by the name of Annabel Lee.'
