Slides illustrate Bruce Cockburn's "The Cry of a Tiny Baby". The song is a contemporary retelling of the Christmas Story. It is one of my favorite songs to hear around Christmas.

Mary grows a child without the help of a man

Joseph get upset because he doesn't understand

Angel comes to Joseph in a powerful dream

Says "God did this and you're part of his scheme"

Joseph comes to Mary with his hat in his hand

Says "forgive me I thought you'd been with some other man"

She says "what if I had been - but I wasn't anyway and guess what

I felt the baby kick today"

Like a stone on the surface of a still river

Driving the ripples on forever

Redemption rips through the surface of time

In the cry of a tiny babe

The child is born in the fullness of time

Three wise astrologers take note of the signs

Come to pay their respects to the fragile little king

Get pretty close to wrecking everything

'Cause the governing body of the Holy Land

Is that of Herod, a paranoid man

Who when he hears there's a baby born King of the Jews

Sends death squads to kill all male children under two

But that same bright angel warns the parents in a dream

And they head out for the border and get away clean

Like a stone on the surface of a still river

Driving the ripples on forever

Redemption rips through the surface of time

In the cry of a tiny babe

There are others who know about this miracle birth

The humblest of people catch a glimpse of their worth

For it isn't to the palace that the Christ child comes

But to shepherds and street people, hookers and bums

And the message is clear if you have ears to hear

That forgiveness is given for your guilt and your fear

It's a Christmas gift that you don't have to buy

There's a future shining in a baby's eyes

Like a stone on the surface of a still river

Driving the ripples on forever

Redemption rips through the surface of time

In the cry of a tiny babe

This is probably my favorite contemporary Christmas song (there's one by Dar Williams that vies for the accolades). I think I love Bruce Cockburn so much because of his spirituality, which he brings in addition to world-class musicality, proficiency, and masterful lyric writing. "Like a stone on the surface of a still river, driving the ripples on forever, redemption rips through the surface of time, in the cry of a tiny babe." That is powerful--whether you think it's truth-telling or myth-making, it's powerful. And the historical accuracy of Herod's hunt for the male children, while Mary and Joseph escape--I'm glad there's a song that talks about his "death squads," and evokes some idea of how horrifying that must have been. I love that the three wise men "come pretty close to wrecking everything..." which they did. If you haven't heard it, or if you have, you'll really enjoy listening to this unique Christmas song. With love, Namaste, Pam

Here's a great Christmas tune that perhaps you've never heard, but this retelling of the Christmas story may touch you. It's my honor to share the beautiful gift of music with you.

Yep yep. Cockburn's official site has a typo in the track list, but the typo is corrected in the underlying article.

I have the CD; it's listed as "Cry of a Tiny Babe". Unless you have a different copy where it's listed differently?

Right you are, and both versions are great in their own way. You can find it if you search for "Lou Reed Cry of a Tiny Babe."
