I loved this song because I believe Derek first points the finger at himself and examines himself to see if he finds the tendency to be like a pharisee within himself first off. ANd this is why he has a love hate relationship with the church. If we are earnest Christians, and examine the church as a whole, we see the same things that Jesus saw when he looked at the Jewish establishment, but the thing is, HE DIED FOR IT ANYWAYS and gave his life for it because he loved it so much.

Jesus loved the Jewish people more than anything, but the one thing he hated more than anything and condemned more than anything was hypocrisy within the Jewish religion at the time. It isn't too hard to say that just maybe Jesus thinks the same about the Body of Christ today, he loves it so much he gave his life for it, but the one thing he probably despises more than anything within it is the hypocrisy within the church.

I can definitely relate to getting that impression. Listening to Derek's music over the years, I think he honestly struggles between feeling that the Church is hypocritical, and at the same time having a heart for the Church. He definitely would still sing this song, and still does I believe. But one thing I doubt he'll ever do is stop pointing out hypocrisy when he sees it in the Church... but he will also never stop loving that Church as Christ's Bride.

I half-feel that Derek was very pro-Church in She Must and Shall Go Free, and then somewhat anti-Church in Stockholm Syndrome. This is probably not true in his heart, but that's the message that comes across.

@VictorianCouch Do not forsake the assembling togetherof yourselves as is the manner of some but continue in fellowship. Hebrews 10:25 which I unfortunately am guilty of. I don't go to church. Mark 2:19, etc
