The difference is the rhythm and measure of the lines in poetry that make it lyrical--poetry directly contributes to music because of its feet and musicality. The two complement each other. King's speech certainly has poetic elements (repetition of phrases, etc.), but for the most part, it is prose. Putting background music to it would add an emphasis, but the difference here is that Reuben's words are poetic already. They're made for music. In a way,all poetry with verse/rhyme could have music.

what you have failed to realize is that all the songs that mean something are just as deep... its just people like you dont listen or dont bother... and people like you like songs by nicky minaj and all those other meaningless songs about sex and drugs...

but rap is essentially a combination of poetry and music and i don't think he should just go ahead and write poems for a living because the music is there to set a mood and make for easy listening

Don't mistake innocence for ignorance, Don't mistake purity for inexperience, Don't mistake humility for weakness.

@chiaofucious I love his words, but I agree about the music thing. I'm rather fond of the song "Word of Mouth". Hadn't actually looked at any of his other stuff before just now. I searched for "I don't want to be a cynic" and he came up. Kind of funny. I don't usually like rap either, but I really like Dan Bull who has some similarities in his message. He is actually rather good at the music thing. Look him up :)

@chiaofucious There's music in the background, and he's reciting poetry to the rhythm of the music. This IS, according to official definitions, music. News flash retard, not everyone listens to music for the exact same reason as you. I don't give a shit if there's singing or rapping, as long as it has rhythm, and plenty of people think the same. So quit acting all high and mighty putting it down, most don't give a shit how hard or easy it is to play, as long as it sounds good.

I've had this CD for months, but this is the first time I've heard Chapter 1 (for whatever reason, my copy didn't have it). This is amazing, and definitely some of the best stuff off of The Boy Vs. The Cynic.

@chiaofucious You're right, but one thing they all have in common is that they are artists. Poetry and music can be used separate or poetry can be combined with music to create a mood for the piece of work.

I understand y'all's opinions but, isn't that what music is? poetry to a beat that's how it started anyway, with minstrels and all. I consider any musician i listen to a poet in their own right, so to call rap poetry i think you need to include all music.

I think John Reuben doesn't need to be defined as rap or spoken word or anything, he is an artist making his sound his own masterpiece. thats all there is to it, its almost like he knows he can't be just a rapper, he cant be a rocker, he can only be John Reu

@chiaofucious Is it poetry in the mode of a song, or a song in the mode of poetry? I applaud Reuben for being brave enough to branch out stylistically like this. His most recent album has tame and off-kilter beats. It's just as good, but in different ways. He's an artist first and foremost. Rhymes, music, and performances are ways he uses to express his thoughts.

@chiaofucious I don't hate anyone for their musical opinions, but I do disagree with you. I think even taking a speech and adding music to the background can be beautiful - it depends on the speech and who's speaking. Both of which in this case, I think are really good. And John Reuben has plenty of "actual" songs, so he has accounted for his "Musician" status.

The Boy v the Cynic is a letter he wrote to the cynic. Like Modernoni said, it's spoken word poetry. Have you ever heard a rap without instrumentals? It's called A Capella. So there can be rap without music. I don't think this music is imaginary. He's got flow, talent, and wonderful lyrics that paint an image. I find the more meaning and more poetic a flow is the better. I'd take this over any fake wannabe gangsters out there talking about how hard they are. God Bless.

in reality all songs are poetry. rap just has a talking tone to it

@Modernoni, did you happen to know that rap stands for Rhythm And Poetry? Therefore you are correct in your poetry with a beat theory. C:

@mike4long agreed, but who is going to start the new revolution here. i havent really seen anyone step up in a big way, and with our track record on leaders, i dont think anyone will. think about all the great leaders we had. since king seems to be the example here look what we did to him; we shot him, and we did the same to gandhi, and other positive leaders. if anyone steps up then wed all have to step up. all 7 billion of us worldwide, idk what im sayin here i guess im thinkin aloud again.
