The Boo Radleys are perhaps best known for their success on the mid nineties Britpop scene with some radiofriendly and rather irritating singles, but years before that they released at least three very good shoegaze albums. A compilation of early singles titled "Learning to Walk" is essential, as well as their debut album for Creation Records, "Everything's Alright Forever".

Lesser known is their actual debut album, released on Action Records on vinyl only in 1990 and titled "Ichabod and I". It's an absolute gem and one of the lost treasures to be looking for if you like lofi British noise-pop shoegaze.

The band seems to have dismised the album as not particularly good but my personal opinion is that they should be really really proud of it and have it reissued ASAP. Just check out the opening track - Eleanor Everything - I mean, wow...!

OK, this was one of the highlights of my teen years! Bought the vinyl on the advice of a friend and just loved it. Thought my record player was broken for the first 2 minutes!!! Awesome! Saw them at ULU and met Martin and Sice afterwards. 2 very unassuming guys, I gotta say. I'm 41 now and still love this! Reckon some of those new acts could learn a thing or two about being raw and playing what you feel, huh! :)

I only ever had a copy of Hip Clown Rag off this albun and then I picked up Kaleidoscope from Probe (Liverpool) a few years later, great sounds. As much as I loved the Boos in this period, looking back now their two best songs, for me, are the original Lazarus (from the EP) and Everything Is Sorrow from C'Mon Kids - real visceral stuff.

The Boos had a great sound early on. Teenage Fanclub had a great sound early on. Sonic Youth + Dinosaur Jr. + My Bloody Valentine + their own distinct melodies = beautiful noise. Bands don't "evolve" when they transform themselves from artists into craftsmen, IMO. Simplicity requires the greatest art. Any technician can play fast and clean. It takes an artist to create emotional soundscapes. The Clash were artists; Van Halen were craftsmen. Most people don't get it.

This album, the Kaleidoscope 'til Adrenaline Eps and Everything's alright Forever are truly criminally underrated gems.

Anyone got a copy of the Peel session version they did of this song? Would have been around 92 probably.. there was this, Foster's Van and one other song. Would kill to hear it again.

@pyenapple Maybe I should have said 'annoying' radio hits..and no, I don't like "..Bench at Belvidere". Personally I think "Lazarus" was their last decent single, although I'm not particularly fond of Giant Steps the album. I dunno, they just lost a spark or something around that time and was soaked up by that whole britpop thing which I for one came to loathe around '95

"rather irritating singles" — eh? Really? You don't like "From The Bench At Belvidere"? I think dismissing all the latter-day Boo! stuff is a tad ridiculous. They had evolved past the point of being a noisy young band that was more in the shadow of its contemporaries. I think they learned how to harness and ficus their noise and influences over time. Granted, "It's Lulu" was a pretty lame single, but you have to give them props for being adventurous and diverse.

This was my favorite album of the early 90s. And was released by Action Records in my home town of Preston. Saw Sice a few times in Raiders (Preston) don't think many people recognized him. He always got up on the dancefloor when a Boo Radleys song was played. Happy daze!
