For the 49th Anniversary of The Beatles doing an Audition to Decca, now Remastered.

"Three Cool Cats" is a 1958 song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The song was covered by The Coasters and, later, by the Beatles. It was originally released as the B-side of the Coasters' hit single, "Charlie Brown".

"Three Cool Cats" is perhaps best known as one of the fifteen songs recorded by The Beatles for their Decca Records audition on New Year's Day 1962 at the Decca Studios in London. The Beatles' cover version featured George Harrison's vocals and Pete Best on drums. The Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, personally chose this and the fourteen other audition numbers from the band's Merseyside dance hall and rock club repertoire. The recording was included on the Beatles' Anthology 1. The group also performed this song several times during the Get Back/Let It Be Sessions of January 1969. None of these have ever been officially released by EMI.

The song appears on the 2005 Ry Cooder album Chávez Ravine, with vocals performed by Little Willie G (Willie Garcia).

There have been many covers of this song. It is featured on Stand Out/Fit In, the 2007 studio album by The Basics, as well as their 2010 live album.

OPINION:

The funniest track of this audition, George delivers a great lead and funnier vocal, along with Paul catchy vocals and John comical vocals; Guitars and bass works properly; Pete does a fine drumming, fitting the song well.

I have the Beatles Decca Sessions 1.1.62 cd on Topline Records (TPO-CD 523) which has a curious version of Three Cool Cats, seeming quite different in structure from the normal recording. Investigating with Audacity I found that the guitar solo in the second half of the track is also inserted verbatim but seamlessly in the first half. Also, the first part of the solo has been used to provide a perfectly plausible instrumental intro about 7 secs long (in comparison to the one second instrumental intro in the normal version. Interestingly, the initial double chorus of "three cool cats" becomes a triple chorus by repeating verbatim the 2nd chorus. This is all cleverly done and artistically valid in my view.

Well, at least the whole album is not un-listenable. I have some Beatles Vinyls too such as The White Album (though covers are not stuck together anymore), Let It Be, Abbey Road, some compilations like 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 (if I am not wrong), 20 Greatest Hits and some other Lennon compilations.

I got the White Album in January, the cover is coffee stained and water damaged. It looks more like a tan album :( The 2 33s were beautiful though. The only downside was a bad scratch on the song Birthday. Appearantly the needle was dragged entirely across that song, with the song is technically ruined now. But that's it...

Sure will. It's actually in pretty good shape... I would say VG+. The beauty of vinyl albums is that you really don't find much damage on them. It's different with 45s. I need to clean my With the Beatles album, it skips on the first 5 songs at a couple parts, and it skips random each time. No signs of damage, so I need some deep groove cleaner.

Yeah, quite expensive. All the way from the UK.

Well, it is still good you have that Silver Beatles album.

Yeah... now I am glad that one day my record player was playing a little slow and I listened to the Silver Beatles album. My dang record player now plays its normal speed for 33 1/3 but the needle is broken... it's an older player...

No problem! I may do a re-remaster of these as I think they still sound somewhat unpolished.

Ahh, I see. Thanks!

The song is here in its original pitch tune and speed. Early bootlegs and releases of this audition had that problem of having the pitch and speed a little bit up causing to sound faster and younger (childish).

Exellent early song of Silver Beatles/The Beatles. Is it just me or is the song slowed down a bit? On the Silver Beatles 1982 album the song sounds a little bit more fast. This is what the song sounded like when my 33 1/3 speed was broken on my record player. I am truely unsure if this is the right speed or not...
