This is the demo Paul made after the Beatles' return from India in May '68. He made it to show the song to the other three. (Paul says he wrote 15 songs in India. He got the idea of including the girls from Ukraine etc. in this song from Mike Love, he of the Beach Boys, who was with the Beatles in India). It's in F sharp major. In Aug. '68, the three of them (Ringo had walked out) started to record it in A major, more upbeat with rock guitars and faster than this, at EMI, for the upcoming LP to be called "The Beatles".

John hated a lot of Paul's lighter stuff from the 67-68 period (Hello Goodbye, Ob-La-Di, etc etc) and he loved Chuck Berry rock so my guess is he was more than happy to jump on "USSR" with him.

The key in which this version is played seems more apropos. for a slow bluesy type song....the regular version is in a higher key I think.

today in 1968 Ringo Starr quit The Beatles during The White Album sessions when the constant bickering and tension became too much for him. The news of Ringo's departure was kept secret, and he rejoined the sessions on September 3rd. After Ringo walked out, the remaining Beatles recorded 'Back In the USSR', with Paul on drums and John playing bass.
