Originally the first (1966) hit for the first batch of Grass Roots, when PF Sloan and Steve Barri were a studio band. Neither wanted to tour, so they hired musicians to replace them, leaving Sloan and Barri, who would become staff producer at Dunhill Records when Lou Adler left, back in the studio. This again shows the Bangles' love of 60's sounds and their ability to update them; the song is also available on their 1990 "Greatest Hits" package.

Whoa... wait a minute. I ran and looked at the Hero single that I purchased in '84 ($1.59!!) it's backed with Tell Me, not this. This song was hidden where??

This is something of a rarity. Initial copies of the single had this on it, but they were supposedly recalled and then another single reissued with "Tell Me" on the b-side. I'm not sure what the reason was for this, but one would suspect the usual "legal problems." I have this 45 as well. I wonder if it's worth a lot.

when jake and the blues brothers were thrown out that red neck club and the owner cheat out his money... they let the bangles play next from behind that chicken wire fence stage. and the drunkards got down on their knees and prayed more than if billy graham was preachin.

@JohnnyCxviii I think you are correct about that. I don't recall the Turtles ever doing Where Were You but they are both Sloan/Barry compositions aren't they?

@BenBarfuss Are you sure you're not thinking of "It Ain't Me, Babe"? The songs and their construction are quite similar.

The Bangles really nailed this one. I wonder if Susanna selected it herself. It suits her voice quite well.

Always loved this song, saw the Grassroots a couple of times, the Bangles do a good cover, sound great and it's awsome that they appreciate good oldies!

I always loved this song when the Grass Roots sang it. Susanna and the girls did a great job! Remind of trips to the beach in my 57 Chevy with the 8 track blaring away! Thanks again for the post.
