My favourite live band in the 60s. We used to see them regularly over on Eel Pie Island.

The Artwoods did not become Deep Purple only Jon Lord who of course was a founder member of Purple . Art formed QuietMelon which his brother and Rod hi jacked and eventually that band became the Faces. Keef Hartley formed the Keef Hartley Big Band and Derek and Malcolm carried on as session musicians. But I agree and so did most musicians of the era the Artwoods were certainly one of teh best R & B bands of the time

Only Jon Lord was in Deep Purple. Keef Hartley started the Keef Hartley big band I think Malcolm Poole and Derek Griffiths did sessions. Art started Quiet Melon which his brother ( ronnie) and Rod Stewart joined then highjacked it & it eventually became the faces. Art went back to graphic design with his other brother Ted and only sang on occasions . Art had great R & B voice an this 'retirement' was a loss to music. Sadly Art passed 2 or 3 years ago . A good band nice guys an great musicians.

Another couple of bands around the same time were The Clique and The Birds (English band), I always used to think of them all worth listening to.

@Harmonicajello The ArtWoods played R& B and they were a hugely popular live band, but much of their lack of commercial success was due to their management not promoting them properly and perhaps not understanding the real nature of the music they played. I knew their agents quite well and it always amazed me that they did not push Art & the boys more. Had they been managed by The Gunnells , who ran The Flamingo and Georgie fame things may have been different

@thepeacefulpoet Well , that is true.It was a quite popular band in Europe, but Beatles' shadow was so strong in those days! Please, don't missunderstand me - I liked Beatles a lot , but what Artwoods (and Deep Purple) were playing in those days was FAR more progressive.I just finished British record cataloque and there were tons of great bands that never made it, because they did not seem to understand the nature of the business.I saw them many times and it was a great music and times were great

@chriskar5 I booked Art and the band a couple of times in 1965/66 and used to go and see them play at other gigs , why they never had better success I have no idea, yes I do they had the wrong agent

It's been said that the Artwoods' lack of success is partly due to lack of self penned numbers. But they were streets ahead of most other bands of the time, inasmuch as their ability to make such original & distinctive interpretations of their covers. They make them sound as if they actually are original!
