The Altar Billies are a Southern California trio led by Michael W Stand formerly of the Altar Boys - a pioneering OC Alternative group from the early eighties and nineties. Rounding out the group are Johnny X on upright and Chuck Cummings on Drums (formerly of Dakota, Aunt Betty's and Common Bond). Although The Altar Boys went on a permanent hiatus in 1992, much of their music is now being resurrected in the down home classic rockabilly style - we like to call it "punktry." The group covers many classics hits, newly penned originals, as well as music from the Altar Boys. Altar Billies are one of many groups that are taking a "liking" to a new and rapidly growing alt country/rockabilly/psychobilly trend (Punktry as we like to call it, but I think we already said that). It's something very new and progressive, but honestly really has been around these parts for quite sometime now. So together with his good buddies Johnny and Chuck, Michael W Stand is once again redefining himself and breaking some new musical ground, and hav'n a real good time as well. We would be much obliged if you would give us a listen...heck, ya might even like it enough to want to pick up our new CD, has a real nice picture of Mike's ol Telecaster on the front...yup, he's still got it, and it sounds as purty as ever!!!
Pinning down the exact sound of the Altar Billies is no easy chore: Is it country? Rockabilly? Or a combination of two specific genres that the "Billies" appropriately titled "punktry?" Well, maybe it's all of the above and more. To be sure, whatever style they happen to "pick at" is not as important as the message they are trying to communicate to every ear that is willing to listen.
Their first 11 song CD features 8 studio tracks produced by Storm'n Norman at Mildred Studios located in the heart of Orange County, California..Johnny, Chuck, and Michael W are a swell bunch of fells that are both excited about this group and new release. The Altar Billies are proud to embrace a style of music with such a rich heritage, and fuse it with songs and a message that is as relevant today, as it's ever been. So strap on yer spurs, pull up the reins, let out a big "Yeeeeee Hawwww" and keep your eyes fixed on the horizon. The Altar Billies are ride'n into town and they're a "twang'n" and "rock'n" until the cows come home. Take a good look see at their music; it's a swell sound'n bunch of clatter that you just might take a hankerin to.
