I hate when I discover somebody too late. Just tripped over (and got trapped in) a broadcast of Glinka's The Life of the Tsar with her, Gedda & Christoff. Pure astonished heaven.

I have very fond memories of attending a concert in Berkeley, California in 1965 or 1966 with my parents at UC Berkeley in which Ms. Stich-Randall was the featured soloist when I was 13 years old. She was a colleague and friend of my late father from their days dating back to the late forties on the east coast (of the U.S.A.). After the concert we all went out for dinner and had a wonderful evening. She there wrote a lovey poem for me which I will always cherish. Several years later in 1972 she visited my parents home in Tacoma, Washington and we spent a wonderful day and evening together with my parents again. After the gathering my father had me drive her back to Seattle where she was staying in preparation for a performance the following day. She insisted I take my dog, Rufus, along with us for the drive. She was such a beautiful, charming and talented musician & artist!

Interesting how Moore provides a different accompaniment for her from the one he creates for Fischer-Dieskau and both are perfect for their contexts. Her control over her voice is so complete that she is able to bring nuances of colour and weight that give the song more emotional variety and richness than usual.

This is truly legendary singing...The piece is a total killer and singers tackling it need ABSOLUTE vocal control...High notes? Almost anybody can have them, but this kind of vocal control (and sensibility) is what makes a great singer...

totally agree with you, but I always bring out of the trance .... ordinary fly, crawl back into the hand of the singer at the end (3:58) of the product

This is certainly one of the most beautiful interpretations of a lied (ANY lied) I've ever heard and seen. Just perfect in every musical and interpretive sense. It's almost "metaphysical", lol.

Thank you for this posting. Ameling's almost ethereal version here has been my favourite. Pryce 1979, too. But here another quality, a different maturity or different lifetime seems to come through. Thank you so much.

Not so much vibrato, I'd say... especially for a 20th century opera singer. Pitch problems in the minor section.

beautifully done, but search Rita Streich's recording of it in 1964. It's much better and you won't hear a more perfect voice sing it. It brings me to tears every time.

If you've never heard her sing ROsenkavalier, you've missed a TREMENDOUS experience -- she' plays Sophie on the great recording with kartajan, Schwarzkopf, and Ludwig, and holds her own perfectly well against those awesome ladies. Indeed hte first time we hear her voice, "ist wie ein Rose vom Himmel," the effect is as intoxicating as the scent of hte rose is supposed to be.

I didn't realise she had just died recently - sad to hear that. She had a fabulous, unique voice, and fortunately there are quite a few recordings about ... very nice to see this difficult but very beautiful little song so well sung.
