Jim's family was playing fiddle in America before the Revolutionary War. They moved to Tennessee, and then to Missouri. Jim moved to Sunnyside, WA, about 55 years ago. He taught a lot of young fiddlers in the Pacific Northwest tunes that had been handed down in his family for many generations. This recording session at the Williams' camp at the 1991 National Oldtime Fiddler's Contest, Weiser, ID, was issued on a Voyager CD. He is backed up by Laura Smith, banjo, Vivian Williams, guitar, Phil Williams, bass. Video by Barry Brower. Jim's music is available on CD 340 "Jim Herd, Old Time Ozark Fiddling" available from Voyager Recordings, www.VoyagerRecords.com

My family (also fiddle players) also left Tenn. and moved to Missouri down in Barry cty at Roaring River. My Great Grandpa's brother moved out to Prosser, Wa. I wonder if the two families knew each other. Does anyone know where they lived at in MO?

This is my Grampa Herd :) I was so happy to see him again. Made my heart happy to hear his fiddle and voice again. Thank you so much for recordings!

I grew up since I was 5 next to Jim and Lou Herd and miss him so much, never thought then that I would be watching him on a computer all those many years ago..... Simple folk but as good as they get.
