Jim's family was playing fiddle in America before the Revolutionary War. They moved to Tennessee, and then to Missouri. Jim moved to Sunnyside, WA, about 55 years ago. He taught a lot of young fiddlers in the Pacific Northwest tunes that had been handed down in his family for many generations. This recording session at the Williams' camp at the 1991 National Oldtime Fiddler's Contest, Weiser, ID, was issued on a Voyager CD.
