A scratchy recording of my dad's old LP, I wanted to share this Robert Tannahill composition. Photographs all my own. First 3 are images of the double-fold 1978 LP cover, purchased for $9.50 Cdn circa 1979. Could find no evidence of 1970s T. Weavers on here.

Love this album. My mum got a copy after they played at the Nettlebed folk club in the late 70's and i've played it ever since..

Used by Michael Nyman (without mentioning the source) for the main theme of the soundtrack of the film "The Piano" (Jane Campion, 1993), he only changed the rhythm into 3/4..

Michael Nyman's version is called The Heard Asks Pleasure First

Also, it would be great if I can find who the vocalist is. This is by far the best version I've heard of Gloomy Winters among lernis,Dougie McLean, etc. The singer's voice stays true to the gloomy love in this poem.

Would someone know who originally set the melody for this song? My guess is R. A. Smith as he hung out with Tannahill (based on primitive Google search). But I want someone to confirm (or not) this.

Such soul in this music. I found this researching Michael Nyman's Piano movie music.

Thanks for posting this. I lost all my early Tannahill Weavers albums in a house fire and it's brilliant to be able to hear this song again.

@1919costa... lucky you, to be in a position to say that the Newton Woods are intact. Who'd have thought? I hope to see them someday, myself--intact.

thanks @catherine munn. Very popular video. Youtube's beginning to annoy me trying to force me to use my full name, which should be none of their damned biz...so might soon get off it. Damned nosy, prying Google (who own it).

@OmfgEtc. Didn't know it if so...mayhap I'll check that out on IMDB. Let's see...it's not on the soundtrack listing, but perhaps it's on the movie. I somehow doubt it? Let me know if you find it's on there. They do The Flowers of the Forest, which has a similar soul.

@japlick2 And in what town, where, was this pub? This song has got more comments than any of the ones I've posted on here. I see have not done as promised, and put up other songs from the album. Partly not mine to post, partly that it takes time. I do feel as if I'm doing the 'right thing,' though, because folks wouldn't otherwise hear them perhaps. And funny how vital our parents were in connecting us with these songs and times.

Love this LP, they played most of these songs on tour in a pub where my mum worked in the late 70's, she bought a copy there and then hence i got to hear it as a child growing up. The front cover fascinated me as a child. My parents saw them live again recently in the same village as years before..no songs from this LP unfortunately. Interesting that the CD version they purchased at the gig isn't mixed as well as the vinyl..

Such a beautiful song, contrasting but melding with that wonderfully haunting aire. It would need someone with the gift of Tannahill to describe the Weavers rendition properly It really is touching. Once you've seen the sun break over a fog shrouded Gleniffer on cold winters day then you'll know it even better.

Aye, that you have @MissStress, that you have, och. I have another of their songs up on here, as well. But this one here is by Robert Tannahill, no?

Being Robbie Burns Day I was searching for some Tannahill Weavers and it looks like I have found a fellow Yukoner! :)
