Mary Wilson was made for songs like this. It is quite unfortunate that Berry Gordy killed the Supremes just so he move Diana forward. In doing this he kept Mary and Florence from showing the world how wonderful they could be as a lead singer.

@soulsista1220, You're right about their vocal gusto! That was the plan. The girls had to watch Ross BEING groomed and fine tuned, and not get ANY attention to develop, and thus to APPEAR "lesser" when thrown a mic. Their spirits were broken, and were a bit less polished in their pigeons when given a token chance. You see they didn't get much, to keep it from accidentally bring discovered... Tho, Mary often shined WITH that, and proved the least thought likely WAS the EASIER of the three to emerge. Motown often TOYED the idea of her being lead, and was evident in how they placed her for her presence's sake. This song, and it's reaction here is a strong indication of what COULD'VE been. Mary just didn't have the mindset of taking it.

ONCE AGAIN ALL I CAN SAY IS EVEN THOUGH DIANA WAS LEAD, REALLY GORDY SHOULD HAVE RELEASED THIS AS A SINGLE JAZZ SONG ..ITS REALLY GOOD.. GEART VOCE AND JAZZ SOUND ... GREAT

I think it was a big mistake Barry Gordy made to make Dianna the sole lead of the Supremes. It killed the chance for the group to be multi dimensional. And it caused the rift between the members. The group would have been stronger if they'd shared the spotlight a little more.

I highly doubt that's Diana and Flo singing in the background, Mary and Flo barely sang background for the songs Diana lead. More than likely this is The Anadantes.

Mary sounds HEAVENLY!! Her rich Alto was meant for songs like this. I wish that this was released.

The deal was that all three could sing, but honestly for the time and for what they wanted meaning the record company to achieve Diana's voice was better suited. Florence and Mary were better in the background. Now I much prefer Cindy Birdsong, she had a soprano voice that was much better for the more sophisticated backgrounds that they did later in the 70's. But the truth is they all had talent and could develop it due to contracts and Motown not wanting anything else.

Bunch of great comments on here, giving Mary her kudo's. She does sound dreamy and sexy on this tune but I think from years of singing background that Mary and Flo lost their vocal gusto and didn't sound as well as they could've when they were actually given an opportunity to sing a lead
