Watching this video & reflecting over last Monday's gig at London's Barbican Theatre, I'm reminded of how far he mighty have fallen. Koz can't seem to be arsed singing the songs properly these days, preferring instead to holler in an obnoxious fashion, and isn't playing much guitar either (this was also the case when I saw Sun Kil Moon last December, although I was hoping that this was a one off schtick to coincide with the Christmas album). Only tunes from the current opus & a couple from the dismally overrated 'Benji' were offered, despite the fact that he hasn't made a great record since 'Ghosts of the Lost Highway'. The trend over 'Benji' & 'Universal Truths' of documenting the minutae of his life just smacks to me of laziness & self indulgence. He's clearly no Henry Miller, and at times it sounds like he's rhyming off items from his shopping list. I'm now convinced Koz has totally lost his muse over the last few years...the last nail in the coffin was the remarks he made about the female journalist towards the end of the gig, which were irrelevant, juvenile, nasty & just plain mean...sad to say from a long time fan (1996 onwards), but I won't be going to see him play live again or bothering to listen to any records from now on.

+Squidward Nostrils - I think the sound you're asking about comes mostly from fingerpicking with nails a little nearer to the bridge instead of directly over the sound hole, that gives it a more treble-y, short sound. He's also using nylon strings on a classical guitar and that definitely affects the tone too, you can look up videos of other classical guitarists to hear the difference the way he plays here is making on the tone.

You may not understand what I'm asking, but how is he getting that unique sound on his guitar, especially the lower sounding strings? Is it because he has a classical guitar?

One thing I really appreciate about Mark is that he has no bullshit gimmicks about him. No flashy clothing or anything, just pure talent. That's all that should* matter.

I saw him at the Union Chapel in London in October - the whole place was silent for about 5 seconds after every song; I don't think we knew whether to clap or cry! In the end we did both! :P J x
