This reminds me of hoziers take me to church, not the music but it's the lyrics and if there was a video I'm sure it would be controversial. Just enjoy it. Sufjan creates beautiful music his music has meaning, it is not about drugs. He is a religious folk/indie singer.

Who cares if this song is about a man who is struggling to come to terms with his newly found revelation that he loves his best friend who doesn't express any romantic feelings regarding members of the same sex? Its like an ocean that divides you two. Forever wanting more but never obtaining and reaching the same page as the other. Never being seen as for your worth. Its very tragic. And beautiful.

I honestly think this song could go either way as to if it is about a friend or lover, I have a hetero friend that this song fits perfectly with, you can love a person without needed to be sexually attracted to them, its okay to feel deep without burying the D into whatever the object of love is.

I don't think this has anything to do with being gay. It's about the integrity of friendship. The singer probably has a best friend that he views as a brother to him. Someone very close and dear to him. He seems very proud of his friend and loves being in his company. It seems like he appreciates him to the full extent. This song could be about his struggle with admitting to his friend that he loves him and cares for him, almost on a sibling basis, because it is often difficult for us to express our feelings towards those who are closest to us.
