Honestly the tone of the strings is somewhat happier- it needed more melancholy tones (the bright french horns and upbeat strings) make this sad story sound triumphant. It is beautiful, but when you match the lyrics to the music, the music sounds a bit ironic to the point of the song so I actually like Bruce Springstein's and Cash's better.

Sting, Cash and Springsteen. All such different interpretations of a wonderful song. The one that knocks my socks off is Springsteen's version at Sting's 60th. birthday tribute concert in 2011. A dramatic and intense performance. (runawaydream's post)

I don't know how anyone can possibly think that Johnny Cash's rendition is better. Don't get me wrong. I absolutely love Johnny Cash, but his doesn't even come close. Not even close.

Fantastic! Debate as to who's version is best always ensues whenever the song is heard . . . Sting or Cash? Fact is, it's neither. Listen to Springsteen's.

The original version is always best......one exception.......Johnny cash.........anyway, I love both artists......without sting, we wouldn't have the the cash version, which if anyone hasn't heard it...it'll make u weep........love you sting........love you cash(!)(!)

IMHO, fantastic rendition of a Sting song that I always enjoyed. The orchestral arrangement is a nice touch. Didn't know Cash covered it til I watched this clip, don't think the JC version is any better or worse but simply different as you'd expect these two artists' takes on the same song to be.
