Don't get me wrong, I'm not averse to folk-rock (love Fairport Convention), but SS really do phone it in when they have some cool jangly tremolo guitar part like in the first verse of Royal Forester or the first verse of Allison Gross, or a nice fingerpicked acoustic bit at the beginning of Saucey Sailor, only to then just play three power chords for the rest of the song, like they cannot be bothered to sustain the creativity, and the fact that Maddy isn't the best singer really becomes evident.

Also the SS as you say do power cord their way through some work.But that was their intention blending of rock and folk; something that brought two genres together (bliss for some),but probably annoyed the crap out of others more traditional :-)

Cool, well I like it a lot, (For me) Maddy brings Steeleye Spans song contents a more raw and down to earth feeling than perfection would.The songs are usually nasty stories from harsh times and her accents/tones flattening a note, whatever its called, make her sound more like she is from that same era and poorer class of folk.

As far as my Pentangle were All Stars comment is concerned, it's just a cold, hard fact. Bert and John were (if booked by a club based on their individual fees) unaffordable as a duo, Jacqui was a successful club artist, and Danny and Terry were jazz session legends (and Danny is still considered in the music industry as the greatest string bass player ever). The Pentangle were and are the one and only true folk supergroup. Even though she died young, Sandy Denny beats Maddy's solo career.

This however, doesn't change the fact that, to me, Jacqui was a better singer. She had a, quite frankly, massive vocal range, with hardly any discrepencies throughout her register. She held her notes better, her ornamentations were cleaner, and she had some great emotive feel. I think it doesn't help Maddy, when her supporting cast instist on power chording their way through most of a song. Royal Forester starts with a great guitar part, that they drop, highlighting Maddy's plaintif singing.

Except she doesn't really "bend" her notes around, if you really listen to her. She often sings the verses very flatly (not in terms of pitch, but rather of timbre) and when she attempts trills or mordents, they are very 'jagged' and unrefined. Some may argue that that is the essence of folk song: a very 'normal' or unprofessional song style as opposed to a more classical style, and I can see the relevance of that arguement.

Wrong place to peddle your taste really. I think Jacqui holds much higher notes in a softer more controlled way for sure and some folk songs are more suited to her and obviously yourself. For me Maddy has a richness of tone that suits the era of written work that Jacqui hasn't got. Maddy bends her notes around; which suits both the gayety and the sorrow in the stories Steeleye Span work with.

Maddy's vocal range pales in comparison to Jacqui's. Plus, the rest of the Pentangle were incredible! Steeleye Span = talented Pentangle = All Star End of story.

Sorry, I like Steeleye Span, but Jacqui McShee from the Pentangle is the best female vocalist ever, in the greatest band ever.

I saw the Span in Dec 74? at Liverpool Empire. Richard Digance should've been support but didn't turn up. THIS resulted in screening of Long Lankin that, 15 year old blue eyed Man- Babe that I was, still Creeps me out when I hear it today. ..
