i have trouble with the bar chord. any tips besides the obvious of practice .Like do i use my thumb to press harder or i know to use the middle finger also but on average how long does it take to gain strength .?

As a beginner guitarist myself I can't stress the importance of learning your barre chords as early as possible. Open chords are great but a TON of songs use at least 1 barre chord (and if you like Beatles, get used to the Bm). Once you learn the first basic barre "F" you can pretty much do anything. The minors are even easier as you can cross your middle finger over your index to create additoinal pressure for a clear sound. (EDIT: Apparently as Marty shows at 4:28 LOL)Another thing I learned is that if you are having trouble getting these strings down and your chords sound choppy, check the "action" (how high the strings are sitting from the neck). Lowering the action on my acoustic made a WORLD of difference!
