Thanks for the upload, this was always my favourite song from the album, liked Mike Evans' vocal as you never used to hear him sing. Love how it goes straight in at the beginning without any intro. 'The crusty baker making his pies', what a great line.

Yep - Stackridge are still gigging - just finished a 19 date tour of the UK. Man In The Bowler Hat ( Pinafore Days in the USA ) is available on CD from Angel-Air Records - as is their entire back catalogue . They released a new Album ( A Victory For Common Sense) in 2009 on Helium Records which is as good as anything they did in the 70's . For live gigs they are now a 5 piece with founder members Andy Davis & James Warren still on board.

I attempted to by a ladies bowler hat from Hobbs in Guildford last week - in the sale of course - my feeble attempts at explaining the cover of this album and my attempts - lol at 52 - of emulating the girl on the front cover fell on very deaf ears..... Crikey. One day I will learn to keep my eccentricity to myself... I also persuaded James Warren in the 1980s to join a fictitious hedgehog adulation society called the Prickels McPhee fan club - students had better things to do back then har har

@mellotrongirl I checked the Stackridge website...Krun Walters said this song was written about a shop in Bath, one which sold gingham dresses and such. An associate of his used to buy his outfits there, but sadly the shop is no longer in existence.

Almost sounds like a Monty Python spoof on Julie Andrews (right down to the cover) but they did such great serious sophisticated material of wide variety...reminds me a little of Kayak and Fruupp...hard to believe the gist of their LP's is pushing four decades in age.

A song that makes me long for times before my time.

Ah the memories. Remember seeing them live back around '72 as a young teenager at the Queens Hall Barnstaple. I see old Mutter is still wearing that bowler hat and they are still gigging. Superb band.
