No 33 Squeeze - Black Coffee in Bed. Let’s Squeeze another number in from our favourite geezers. (see what I did there!) I love the song for reasons which are self-evident and I’ve already been through them a couple of times with other numbers, but the video is, to turn a cliché, so bad it’s brilliant. I love the obvious discomfort of all the band members concerned, not, as you might first imagine at the dreadful 80’s clothes, but at the colossal shiteness of the whole narrative set-up, and most magnificently the attempt at cool-chic of using the black lass to highlight in luminous capital letters the first word of the song title. I imagine they all went daan the boozer and got totally shitfaced after that. (There may be some very subtle point which totally eluded me and I am ready to stand corrected if there is.)This song, in my opinion is a great example of how Squeeze managed to survive the transition from young upstart new kids to seasoned professionals without losing the appeal of songs. The themes of infidelity and comeuppance are age old but the trick is to frame them in such a way that everybody sings along to a great tune without thinking about it much. As ever the vocals underpin this feeling but to my ear the rhythm guitar is what makes this such a pleasant listen. All the above factors combine to show why Squeeze survived long after most of their contemporaries in the charts and are so beloved of frustrated wannabe pop-star dads the world over.

This was our Theme song on a middle school trip that I escorted to Arches NP, Utah. We were all singing it in the car ride. Played it three times, the kids loved it and so did I.

Guitar solo is underrated. Heavily jazz influenced and very much a creative solo for a pop song. We need more stuff like this.

It's pretty much impossible to name a single favourite song. However, there is literally no time where I don't feel like listening to this; no time where it wouldn't fit perfectly. And there will never be a time when this song isn't cool and fresh. While I can't name a single favourite, I feel as though this would be it.
